RSE students in grades K–6 stepped into Spain's rhythms and traditions during flamenco workshops that kicked off Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week.
Led by dancer Maria Loreta Celitan, founder of Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Co. Inc., the workshops gave students a hands-on introduction to the dance form. Participants explored castanet playing, footwork, palmas, rhythmic hand clapping, and braceo, the arm and hand movements used in flamenco.
After practicing the techniques, students learned a short choreographed routine and performed it to music. Their colorful outfits added to the festive atmosphere as they put their new skills into motion.
The workshops brought Spanish culture and tradition to life, giving students an opportunity to learn through music, movement and participation.
