RSE First Graders Bring the Olympic Spirit to Life with Winter Games Celebration

First graders in Allison Alvarado and Kandyce DeMory’s class recently wrapped up an exciting and educational unit on the Winter Olympics — culminating in their very own Olympic Games Day.
The unit began with a classroom “Opening Ceremony,” where students created their own Olympic torches and learned about the traditions that have united athletes around the world for generations. Throughout the unit, students explored the history of the Olympic Games, discovered various Winter Olympic sports, and discussed what it truly means to be an athlete, including the values of dedication, perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
The excitement built toward a culminating “Olympics Day,” during which students competed in a series of mini-Olympic-style games. From friendly races to skill-based challenges, the day was filled with energy, encouragement, and teamwork.
The celebration concluded with a special Closing Ceremony, where every student was awarded a gold medal in recognition of their participation and outstanding sportsmanship. The message was clear: in this classroom, everyone is a champion.
It was a memorable day of learning, movement, and community, and a powerful reminder that the Olympic spirit is about much more than winning. It’s about effort, respect, and celebrating one another.
