Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary Launches Yearlong Faculty Study of The Anxious Generation
Faculty and staff at Remsenburg-Speonk Elementary School are embarking on a yearlong professional study of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt.
This best-selling book has sparked national dialogue about the effects of technology and social media on today’s youth. The book has been a fixture on The New York Times Best Seller list for the past year and is influencing not only public opinion but also policy decisions nationwide.
RSE Superintendent Denise Sullivan said the initiative represents a thoughtful and proactive approach to addressing an issue impacting children everywhere.
“This year will be one of reflection and learning for the adults in our school community,” she explained. “We want to understand better the impact of social media on the mental health of our children, and then determine what, if any, changes should be made within our school environment. These conversations will take place at faculty meetings, and we will invite parents to engage in a three-part discussion series with Dr. Kelly Zinn.”
Dr. Zinn emphasized that the purpose of this work is to “examine technology’s influence on childhood and collaborate on strategies to foster resilience, connection, and well-being for students.”
By engaging both educators and families in this ongoing dialogue, the district aims to strengthen its shared commitment to student well-being and prepare students for a healthier relationship with technology.
