School Mandated Health Services

• Physicals are required for all new enterers, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students. Exams are acceptable up to 12 months prior to the start of the school year. For example, if the year started September 8, 2015, then a physical conducted September 8, 2014 or later is valid for the entire school year.
• Screenings for Vision/ Hearing/ Height/Weight will be conducted yearly for all students
• Scoliosis Screening for 5th and 6th grade only.
• Please see mandated NYS Immunization requirements, which is attached below.
• Immunizations must be in compliance and up to date with state regulations. Pursuant to Public Healthy Law 2164, every student entering or attending public school must be immunized. See the Public Health Law 2164 and the CDC's recommended vaccine schedule.

When to keep your child home from school?

• When your child has a contagious illness such as strep throat, flu, impetigo
• Fever greater than 100.4°F orally; Vomiting or diarrhea-children need to stay home if either occurred within 24 hours
• Significant cough that makes a child feel uncomfortable or disrupts the class
• Red, runny eyes that distract the child from learning; Pink eye can be highly contagious depending on the cause. Children can return to school with the permission of the treating doctor. Practice good hand washing.
• Large amount of discolored nasal discharge, especially if accompanied by facial pain or headache
• Severe ear pain or drainage from the ear
• Severe headache, especially if accompanied by fever
• Head Lice-children must be treated before they return to school. Nits must be removed as part of treatment. Use appropriate lice shampoo

Students Returning to School: Please Note 24 Hour Rule

- 24 hours without a temperature and without fever reducing medicine

- 24 hours without nausea , vomiting , diarrhea

- 24 hours of receiving medication for treatment of illness

**Remember, whenever you keep your child home from school, please call the school nurse in advance of the start of the school day and leave a message that your child will be absent.**

Medication Policy

• The Remsenburg-Speonk School encourages parents/guardians, whenever possible to administer medications before and /or after school. Medications needed during school hours must be administered by the nurse. A physician's order and parent/guardian permission form with the medication are required.
• All medications must be delivered to the school nurse by a parent in a pharmacy labeled container with the child’s name, medication, dosage and frequency of administration.
• Medication should be delivered to the School Nurse by the parent. It should not be transported on the school bus.
• Parents are advised to ask the pharmacist for two container, one to remain at home and one at school.
• Medication orders must be renewed annually
